Reading the system requirements it sounds like unless they made a patch for Lion or later, it likely is having trouble with some of its old Rosetta code. The system requirements of 10.6 or later suggest it may not have been tested after Rosetta was dropped from the operating system. But it also could be an issue with your security preferences. Note both Gatekeeper and Security preferences in System Preferences may be at play here. You can weaken the security, if you trust that there is no inbound traffic into your Mac otherwise.

Prepare for War
Hearts of Iron 2 is the sequel to the most appreciated World War II PC game of true Grand Strategic scope ever made. As in its forbear, the map spans the entire world and allows you to play one of over 175 countries during the course of World War II. The game is completely revised with an updated combat system, a new map, revised and easy-to-use interface, new technology tree and hundreds of other updates and improvements.
As the German war machine falls, two great nations rise to claim power. In the West, there is the United States, leader of the allied nations, and in the East lies the Soviet Union under communist rule. As both nations attempt to claim superiority, a new war is waiting around the corner; this time, the conflict will decide who will be the remaining superpower.
Play as the ruler of one of 175 countries through World Wars II and III. As the Allies and the Soviet Union clash in Europe, the fate of the world hangs in the balance.
The campaigns and scenarios
In addition to the four grand campaigns (1936, 1939, 1941 and 1944) of the original game, one extra scenario (1945) has been added. This new “what if” scenario features a continuation war between the United States and the Soviet Union. The time limit has also been extended to 1953 and additional warfare and diplomatic options have been included.
Battle scenarios
Pre-war scenario

1944 Platinean War. Argentina, as part of the Axis, declares war on Brazil.

Great game…except for the crashing

Hearts Of Iron 3 Not Working For Mac 2018 Update

I was ecstatic to find HoI2 on the App Store. There is no telling how many hour I put into the PC version during my teen years. When I opened it and the opening score came on-I literally got chills. The game itself is one of the best grand strategy games I have ever played. If you are a WWII buff, you will not find (in my opinion), another game that has both historical accuracy and the ability to change history. The PC version was fantastic, but did have some a few bugs-especially late in the game with the diplomacy tab. The Mac version is chock-full of crashes though. I have determined a couple having to be with it being later in the game, and troops arriving in a different province at 23:00 hours. I know that sounds crazy, but making sure I changed some of my arrival times helped some. Another trick is pausing the game, and then switching to statistics tab, and then unpausing it. This sometimes helps get past those buggy areas where the game seems to crash at a certain time no matter what you do. You’ll definitely want to save often as it is extremely frustrating getting a lot of things done in a month, and having it crash right before autosave. If this were any other game, I would have given up by now-but the game is so enjoyable that I put up with the constant crashing. If Paradox/Virtual Programming would put out a patch to correct these things, I would gladly pay for that patch.

Great game, but...

Hearts Of Iron 3 Not Working For Mac 2018

I’ve played this game for over 10 years now. Excited to find out it was on the App Store when I switched to Mac. I love this game. However, same issues as the other Reviewers. Game crashes a few years into game play. Then the game started to crash at start up. I unistalled it completely. Redownloaded it, still crashed at start up. Bought it over again and downloaded it fresh. (That dedicated). Still crashed at start up. Reverted to a previous computer back up. Worked great again, well minus the crashes few years in. Two months later, crash at start up. Repeated every step up too buying it again. Obviously the game is great if you’ve been playing it for over 10 years. Just the conversion from PC to Mac with no updates to fix the bugs make the game all but impossible to play on Mac. Don’t judge this game off of a poor conversion. Legendary game, poor platform performance. Please fix!!!

Crashed in Sierra

It is a masterpice. However, after updating to Sierra, this game no more works at all.
