Best Overall

Aimersoft DVD Ripper

Aimersoft DVD Ripper 3
Easy to use
Converts quickly
May slow down other applications while it rips

This Aimersoft DVD rip software does much more than convert files from discs and save them to your computer. Thanks to Aimersoft’s library of preprogrammed customization profiles, you can take your videos with you on your smartphone or tablet to watch anywhere.
Among the more than 175 optimization profiles, there are also options that can format your videos to play on gaming systems, smart televisions and almost any other device you own. You can use these profiles to customize the conversion for optimal playback on specific devices, including iPhone, Galaxy tablets, Sony PlayStation and more.
You can also convert your DVD movies into plain-Jane video files like MOV and MP4. And the process of ripping DVDs is as simple as can be – all you do is load the DVD you want to rip into the program, select a preprogrammed optimization profile and press start.
In our tests, it took Aimersoft DVD Ripper less than half an hour to rip and convert a full DVD movie into a digital format that can be used by any media player. Also, when our video experts reviewed the results, they found that the ripped file was nearly identical to the source material. There was no compression artifact, motion blur or interlacing, which are common problems with lesser DVD rippers.

Best Value

Prism Video Converter

Prism Video Converter Plus
Has a free version
Has a clean interface that makes it easy to use
No GPU encoding
Takes more than two hours to convert a feature-length DVD

The first thing you should know about Prism Video Converter is that neither its free version nor its paid version can rip commercial DVDs.
This is because almost all DVDs you buy at the store are encrypted to protect against piracy. Prism Video Converter only rips and converts homemade and unprotected discs, which is extremely limiting. However, you may find it useful if you have a collection of DVDs with old home movies or other self-made content on them.
Prism has a clean interface that leaves little room for guesswork. All its features and tools are clearly marked, and while it may take the uninitiated a few times through the ripping process to figure it out, the program is easy enough for anyone to get the hang of. The software is missing a few other features we look for in DVD rippers. For example, Prism Video Converter can’t auto-transfer converted videos to iTunes, and it lacks GPU encoding, which speeds up the conversion process. You also can’t use the program to share your videos on sites such as YouTube and Facebook.
Prism Video Converter is the most basic DVD ripper we reviewed. If your needs are as basic, then the price is right. However, if you want to rip and convert commercial DVDs, you need to look elsewhere.

Best for Optimization

WonderFox DVD Ripper

WonderFox DVD Ripper Pro
Handsome interface
Best
More than 250 device customization profiles
Can’t add watermarks to converted videos

Most of the DVD rippers we reviewed have a basic, even drab user interface, which is fine for the rather mundane task of DVD conversions.
But WonderFox DVD Ripper’s developer took the time to make its interface modern, attractive and sleek. This is a breath of fresh air in a stagnant category. We praised our top pick for having a large library of preprogrammed optimization profiles to tailor your DVDs for playback on a number of devices.
But WonderFox DVD Ripper stands head and shoulders above Aimersoft, with a profile library that accommodates more than 250 devices. So, if you have a not-so-popular smartphone or a tablet from a non-mainstream brand, you may not find the right optimization profile anywhere else but in WonderFox.
This program is a bit slower than our top choice, taking anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to convert a feature-length DVD movie. However, that’s still fast considering some of the other programs we tested take two hours or more to complete the same task.
WonderFox DVD Ripper’s results were as good as or better than those of most of the other DVD rippers we reviewed. Our video experts could only identify minor quality degradation in the small details of the converted DVD footage.

Best for Archiving

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum Edition
WinX DVD Ripper Free Edition
Can pull a disc image off a DVD.
It lacks the ability to add watermarks to ripped videos.

Just ripping the video and converting it into a playable format is one thing. It’s something else to make an exact copy of a DVD to keep on your computer. And that’s where this WinX DVD rip software excels.
This is accomplished by ripping a DVD’s disc image, or ISO file. This is a digital blueprint of a DVD, complete with menus, extra features and the rest. You can use this file to play on DVD player software without needing the original disc or use it to burn a new copy of the disc if you lose the original.
WinX DVD Ripper Platinum is the only product on our lineup that can pull a disc image onto your computer. That makes it a great choice for archivists or those who simply want to back up their physical media onto an external hard drive for the day when their original discs won’t exist anymore.

Smallest File Output Size

Leawo DVD Ripper

Leawo DVD Ripper
Exports smallest video files of all the programs we reviewed.
It lacks features such as auto-transferring to iTunes and GPU acceleration.

If storage space on your computer is at a premium, you should consider Leawo DVD Ripper. It produces the smallest video files of all the products we tested.
We used each program to rip the same movie and convert it into a playable format and noted how large each exported file was. The largest file sizes we saw exceeded 20 gigabytes (which was a major outlier), and the average file size pushed three gigabytes.
Leawo DVD Ripper produced a file of the same movee that was just over two gigabytes. So, if you plan on storing a lot of movies locally and want to save on storage space, this is the program for you.

How we tested DVD rip software

We’ve been reviewing the best DVD ripper software for almost a decade. Our team of reviewers and video experts has developed a series of tests designed to gauge each application’s usability, conversion time, customization options, exported file size, ability to bypass anti-piracy encryptions and basic video editing tools, as well as to judge the overall quality of the converted videos. We ripped dozens of DVDs, customized and optimized them for various types of devices, and timed how long it takes to perform a conversion. Our video experts then spent hours examining each video, searching for imperfections in the picture and sound.

Every DVD ripper we reviewed was subjected to a battery of tests to help us determine which ones are best for certain tasks.

  • Usability Test: We inspected each program’s interface and workflow, as well as counted the number of clicks it takes to perform common tasks such as loading a disc, starting a conversion, and accessing video editing tools and other customization features. We also evaluated whether each program is easy to use for a person with little or no DVD-ripping experience.
  • Timing Test: We timed how long it took each program to rip a DVD and convert it into a format that’s playable by other media software. Times ranged from less than 30 minutes to over two hours, and we found that the time it takes to convert a ripped file has no effect on its final quality.
  • Size Test: After using each software, we looked at the size of the ripped files it created. Smaller files are better because they take up less room on your computer or other device. The best DVD rippers created files between 2GB and 3GB, and lower-performing programs bloated files up to as large as 20GB.
  • Quality Test: We used each program we reviewed to rip and convert the same DVD. When we were done, our video experts watched the ripped files on a large-screen television and searched for imperfections such as compression artifacts, motion blur, ghosting and interlacing issues. The best programs produced files with minimal or no quality loss compared to the source material.

What makes a good DVD rip software?

The best DVD rippers have a variety of features and tools that allow you to rip and convert DVDs, as well as edit the resulting files. Below are the criteria we used to rate and rank these applications:

Conversion choices:

Every application we reviewed has the ability to convert DVDs into the most popular video file formats such as MP4, MOV and AVI. But the best go far beyond that. They offer a library of preprogrammed optimization profiles for specific devices such as smartphones, tablets, gaming systems, smart TVs and more.

The usefulness of these programs increases as the number of options rises. For example, our top pick allows you to optimize your DVD conversions for more than 100 specific smartphone and tablets models, while our value pick only provides six. If you have multiple devices, or even a device that’s obscure or rare, there’s a much better chance our top pick will have an optimization profile for it.

Best Dvd Ripping Software For Mac 2018

Ripping attributes:

The best DVD rippers convert quickly, and the files they convert are high quality and a manageable size. Also, an application’s interface should be intuitive and allow you to start a rip in three steps or less. Furthermore, the best rippers can extract audio clips from discs, capture subtitles and more. When we assessed each program’s ripping attributes, we consider which features and tools it has, as well as how well they work.

Customization tools:

Even the most exhaustive library of preprogrammed output profiles can’t cover the many ways you can customize a video. As such, the best programs allow you manually adjust codecs, aspect ratios, bit-rates, frame rates and more before you rip a DVD.

Also, most of the products we reviewed include a basic video editor you can use to trim away unwanted footage, crop video, add watermarks and edit subtitles.

How much does DVD ripper software cost?

Generally, you can expect to pay between $40 to $50 for the best DVD ripper software. This is a fair price, considering the functionality you get. If a program simply ripped videos, it might not be worth it. But the fact that they include editors, converters and optimizers make them more than worth the price tag.

Can I get help & support for my DVD rip software?

No matter how easy an application is to use, you may occasionally need support. Manufacturers that provide excellent customer service make the best DVD rippers. Look for a program that comes with tutorials, FAQs and a knowledgebase on the developer’s website. In case you can’t find your answers there, manufacturers should also offer email or live chat support.

Can I get any good free DVD ripper software?

If you’re short on cash or only need the bare minimum from a DVD ripper, Prism by NCH Software may suit your needs. It has a free home-use version, but it comes with several drawbacks.

The biggest problem is the enormous files it produces. When we tested this program, the average ripped file was in excess of 20GB. In addition, this software can't rip commercial discs protected by anti-piracy encryptions. As such, you can only use it on homemade discs and vanishingly rare unprotected commercial discs.

HandBrake is another alternative. It is free, open source software that’s been around for a long time. The program can rip DVDs, but like Prism, it’s limited to ripping unprotected discs. Plus, it’s a bit advanced for casual users. Unless you’re a media whiz, you’re better off paying for an easy-to-use program like the ones we reviewed.
